Tom Sellar - Chair
Tom
trained and practiced as a lawyer in
Glasgow before moving to London to join
Unilever’s management training scheme.
He qualified as a management accountant
and moved to Hawick in 1973 to join Lyle
and Scott, where he worked for 27 years,
most of those as Finance Director but
latterly as Operations Director. Tom
retired early in 2000 and took on
position of Treasurer at Hawick RFC for
3 years. He was appointed as Director of
Borders Sport and Leisure Trust in 2002
and Chairman from 2003 – 2005. Currently
Tom is Director of BSLT, Chair of
Volunteer Centre Borders, Adviser at
Citizen’s Advice Bureau and student of
Earth Sciences with Open University.
Isobel King
Mrs King spent nearly 30
years in the advertising and PR industry
in London as a Company Secretary and Personnel
Administrator, this included the
flotation of a company on the Stock
Exchange. She is the author of The
Manager’s Guide to Solving Personnel
Issues published by Pitman
Publishing and the Institute of
Management Foundation in 1994 and since
translated into other European
languages.
After
moving to Scotland in 1994, she lectured
at Borders College and Heriot-Watt in
business and employment law at under-
and post-graduate levels. She has
served as Membership Secretary of the
City of London Branch of the Institute
of Management (now Chartered Management
Institute) and Branch Chairman of
Borders Branch. She is a Freeman of the
City of London.
In retirement Mrs King has devoted her time to the voluntary sector: She is a Director of Volunteer Centre Borders, and Secretary of Arthritis Research UK (Melrose). She has also served as a member of the Borders Learning Partnership New Ways Theme Team, Member of the Community Based Adult Learning and Guidance Network, Chairman of Borders Adult Learning & Achievement Group (Adult Learners Awards and Borders Interactive Gathering) and is a past Director of the Scottish Borders Community Development Company - trading as the Bridge.
Jocelyn Naylor Kołodziej
Jocelyn was born in Bombay and spent the first half of her life in Asia.
She has a BA in Social Sciences and has lived in the Borders for 11 years. Prior to that she lived in Edinburgh and worked for various organisations including Reuters, NHS Lothian and Bayer Pharmaceutical.
Since moving to the Borders, Jocelyn has worked in the Third Sector and joined the newly-formed Volunteer Centre Borders in September 2005. She became a Director in 2008.
She is a qualified Reiki Practitioner and Zumba Fitness Instructor and volunteers with various local groups.
Jocelyn lives in Innerleithen with her husband, 2 children, 3 dogs and 2 hens!
Marjorie Hume
Born
& brought up in the environs of London,
Marjorie has had a diverse career in
public service, with experience of both
the planning and delivery of customer
focused services. Working in Local
Government for over 36 years in an inner
London Borough and a Surrey District
Council has given her an awareness of
the needs of the various communities in
these areas. Although by profession a
qualified librarian, Marjorie is also a
member of the Chartered Management
Institute and the latter part of her
career has been in the field of policy
development and strategic management.
She set up and supported the Local
Strategic Partnership bringing together
the public, private, voluntary and
community sectors to work together for
the community of Surrey Heath and was
instrumental in the development of the
Borough’s Community Plan. From 2004
-2007 Marjorie was a Member of the
Management Board of the Royal Scottish
Country Dance Society (RSCDS) - a
Scottish charity. Prior to this she was
Chairman of the
Berkshire/Hampshire/Surrey Border Branch
of the Society and in 2003 organised and
shared the chairing of the RSCDS first
Branch Forum at Perth – bringing
together delegates from across the
world. In November this year she was
elected to the General Purposes and
Finance Committee of the Society for a
three year term. Following retirement
from Local Government in December 2007,
Marjorie has recently moved to the
Scottish Borders to the village of
Allanton.
Doug Folan
Doug moved from Hertfordshire where he was the County Adviser for Physical Education to join Scottish Borders Council where he was the Manager - Sport, Health and Physical Education at SBC and Chair of Physical Education Scotland. He is an HMIE Assessor of Community Learning and Development and an Accredited Assessor with EFQM - Quality Scotland. He has written led and implemented the first quality improvement framework for cultural services in Scotland and is a key officer in the transformation of community services.
Rhona Calder
Rhona
has lived and worked in the Borders all
her life. Qualified in institutional
management, she then married and when
family commitments lessened, she started
volunteering with Citizens Advice in
Eyemouth. Her interest and dedication to
issues affecting the community led her
to train further and eventually become a
paid member of staff. She now manages
the Berwickshire Citizens’ Advice
Service – part of Roxburgh CAB, with
offices in Duns and Eyemouth. She has
extensive experience in recruiting,
training and managing volunteers, as
well as supporting paid money advisers,
overseeing Berwickshire HMRC ‘get credit
for working’ project, and managing the
Berwickshire Citizens Advice Youth
Project. Rhona has firsthand experience
of joint working between statutory and
voluntary agencies, and is familiar with
the process of working with the local
authority to maximise the impact of
volunteering.
