Sheila Cox - Convenor
Sheila trained as a Home Economics
teacher in Aberdeen before moving to
Newcastle-upon-Tyne on marriage to a
member of the Royal Air Force. She first
moved to Berwickshire in 1968 and has
lived in the area on and off since. She
has worked as a volunteer in community
run craft shop for 5 years in West
Lothian. Sheila also taught young people
with severe learning difficulties with
Rudolf Steiner Organisation in
Edinburgh. For the past 20 years Sheila
has worked as a minister in the Scottish
Episcopal Church serving Livingston,
Craigmillar, Niddrie, Edinburgh and
Eyemouth until retirement in December
2006. Sheila also served on a local CAB
Committee in Livingston. She has served
on the Executive of Berwickshire
Association of Voluntary Service (BAVS)
for many years. She chaired BAVS
volunteer centre committee and was
involved in the amalgamation of the four
local volunteer centres.
Tom Sellar - Treasurer
Tom trained and practiced as a lawyer in Glasgow before moving to London to join Unilever’s management training scheme. He qualified as a management accountant and moved to Hawick in 1973 to join Lyle and Scott, where he worked for 27 years, most of those as Finance Director but latterly as Operations Director. Tom retired early in 2000 and took on position of Treasurer at Hawick RFC for 3 years. He was appointed as Director of Borders Sport and Leisure Trust in 2002 and Chairman from 2003 – 2005. Currently Tom is Director of BSLT, Treasurer of Volunteer Centre Borders, Adviser at Citizen’s Advice Bureau, volunteer with Borders Forest Trust, and student of Earth Sciences with Open University.
Isobel King
Mrs King spent nearly 30
years in the advertising and PR industry
in London as a Company Secretary and Personnel
Administrator, this included the
flotation of a company on the Stock
Exchange. She is the author of The
Manager’s Guide to Solving Personnel
Issues published by Pitman
Publishing and the Institute of
Management Foundation in 1994 and since
translated into other European
languages.
After
moving to Scotland in 1994, she lectured
at Borders College and Heriot-Watt in
business and employment law at under-
and post-graduate levels. She has
served as Membership Secretary of the
City of London Branch of the Institute
of Management (now Chartered Management
Institute) and Branch Chairman of
Borders Branch. She is a Freeman of the
City of London.
In retirement Mrs King has devoted her time to the voluntary sector: She is Director Scottish Borders Community Development Company - trading as The Bridge, Director Volunteer Centre Borders, Member of the Borders Learning Partnership New Ways Theme Team, Member of the Community Based Adult Learning and Guidance Network, Chairman of Borders Adult Learning & Achievement Group (Adult Learners Awards and Borders Interactive Gathering) and Member of the Senior Executive Programme – Scottish Business in the Community.
John Montgomery
John was
born in Edinburgh and educated at
Portobello High School. On leaving
school in 1972 he joined Edinburgh City
Police (later to become part of Lothian
and Borders Police) where he served most
of his career in the Criminal
Investigation Department, retiring in
2003 as a Detective Chief
Inspector. John now lives in Eshiels,
just outside Peebles with his wife,
Sharon and their 3 cats. Following his
retirement, John became Project
Co-ordinator of Up2U Peer Education
Group, an award winning youth group
offering the young people of Tweeddale
information and advice on drugs, alcohol
and sexual health. In 2006 he became
manager of Peebles Citizens Advice
Bureau. John is a keen rugby man, and is
presently the Chair of the Border Rugby
Referee Society. His hobbies include
mountain biking and photography.
Ron Dick
J. Ronald
Dick was Educated at the Universities of
St. Andrews and Edinburgh has worked as
a Parish
Minister in the Church of Scotland for
twenty-three years. During this time
also had the opportunity of involvement
in the Chaplaincy Team at HM Prison
Edinburgh, and shared the Chaplaincy
Post at Milestone House, Edinburgh,
working with people infected and
affected by HIV/ AIDS, before being
appointed as Chaplain to the Borders
General Hospital NHS Trust in September
1997. Has wide experience of both being
and working with volunteers and has
served on various committees/groups in
the voluntary sector, including the
former Scottish Marriage Guidance
Council and Cruse Bereavement
Care.
George W Megahy
After leaving school George joined the family fruit and flower growing business in the Clyde Valley. This was followed by a regular engagement in the Royal Air Force.
On leaving the R.A.F. George obtained a place for mature students at Durham University. He then held several community development positions in different parts of England, returning to Scotland to take up a similar position with Stirling County Council then to SCVO (Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations).
George took early retirement in 1994 after completing 25 years with SCVO as a Community Development Worker with responsibility for assisting with the establishment of CVS (Council for Voluntary Service) in the south half of Scotland, and with national responsibilities for providing the SCVO’s Community Halls Advisory Service.
