Cassandra, aged 15, volunteered as a member of the Young People's Panel, a Big Lottery Project run by Volunteer Centre Borders. The Role of the Young People’s Panel was to look at all local applications that can be funded through the Big Lottery grants programme and make recommendations (strongly endorse, endorse, partially endorse, not endorse) based on the needs and demands of local young people.

I volunteered with Volunteer Centre Borders as a telephone interviewer which involved contacting volunteers registered with VCB to speak to them and ask them about their volunteering placement. I enjoyed this experience as I liked hearing about the volunteer’s experiences and how they felt about what they were doing.

The job I was given to do whilst volunteering at Bowhill House and Country Park was to help the Ranger Service in their everyday tasks and act as the Seasonal Ranger. I was given a project to carry out whilst I was there relating to Bats. This project entailed designing and sourcing materials for the creation of 12 bat boxes to be located strategically around the Estate in order to find out bat numbers on the Estate. |

“I enjoy volunteering here because it’s good fun, and there’s a good atmosphere, despite the fact that a lot of people have had significant injuries; some are in wheelchairs, some can’t speak properly, they may have emotional and behavioural problems, yet they can still laugh. It’s a positive environment, despite the fact that the people have had accidents which have changed their lifes, changed their family’s life as well.” |

A year and a half ago, Sara was a student in her penultimate year of an Honours degree in psychology at Edinburgh University . She was looking for some experience in the field of clinical psychology to help her make decisions regarding her professional career. Quite by chance she read a notice on the department notice board and applied to volunteer at Penumbra, which markets itself as “one of Scotland ’s leading mental health organisations, providing a wide range of support services for adults and young people”. |

Twelve months ago, previous to starting to volunteer, Rob had a drug and alcohol addiction. He was in limbo and did not know what to do. A friend recommended a place called The Bike Station which strips and rebuilds bikes to give to charities and he went along to have a look. Before he knew it he had a spanner in his hand and was volunteering regularly. |

The role has had a distinct impact on Sofia 's life. The continuity of the post gives her a feeling of stability in her short-term stay in Edinburgh . The experience also helps draw together past professional experience, combining to offer something stronger to continue to build her career on. In response to the question of whether she would recommend her voluntary post to others she replied spontaneously - "yes! I can only say it has been good for me. It's definitely worth trying out. There's much to get from it - experience, friends, fun!". |
